(October 1: NYC, NY): Mitch Winehouse , jazz singer, author and father of the late Amy Winehouse will be performing with his jazz band at The Iridium in NYC on Thursday, October 24th to help raise money for The Amy Winehouse Foundation (US) . Winehouse, after many years of coaxing from his daughter, made his recording debut Rush of Love in 2010 http://www.mitchwinehouse.co.uk. The album helped turned a life-long ambition into reality, showcasing his in-depth knowledge and sheer passion for Jazz and Swing music and featured a host of rarely covered classics as well as four brand new tracks. The album also gave father and daughter the opportunity to publicly share their passion for jazz, as Amy would attend some of Mitch’s shows when she was in town and join him on stage.
Upon Amy’s passing, Mitch along with Amy’s mother Janis formed the Amy Winehouse Foundation. The Foundation was formally established in the UK in 2011 by Amy’s family in honor of her memory and in keeping with her passion of wanting to help children in need. To date, the UK Foundation has allocated over £500,000 to various organizations. Soon after they formed a US Foundation.
Launched in the US at Joe’s Pub in NYC on April 11, 2012, the mission of the Amy Winehouse Foundation –US www.amywinehousefoundation.org/us is supporting and empowering children and young adults in need through music therapy and music education and works to prevent the effects of drug and alcohol misuse on young people. The Foundation aims to support, inform and inspire vulnerable and disadvantaged young people to help them reach their full potential. Among the US Foundation’s first missions was to assist the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra (NOJO), http://www.nola.com/music/index.ssf/2012/04/amy_winehouse_family_donates_1.html in supporting after school music programs for children in those districts still struggling from the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina and to work with the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music (BCM). http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/01/16/amy-winehouse-foundation-announces-gift-to-brooklyn-conservatory-of-music/?_r=0
