Hip-hop pioneer Darryl “D.M.C.” McDaniels is no stranger to making art. As one of the core members of rap group Run-DMC, McDaniels has since given back to those less fortunate beyond music. At the Doing Art Together (DAT) organization’s annual gala, DMC will be honored for his contributions to helping under-served communities in NYC in the classroom and life.

“It’s a huge, huge, huge honor and a privilege to be associated with such an incredible event and organization,” he tells VIBE. “I’m really big on the arts.”

The veteran rap star also had a huge bone to pick with the government and put it on wax for a song called “Noise Revolution,” which targeted the system for putting a halt on art and after school programs for the youth.

“If you deprive the children of the arts there’s no growth in education, there’s no growth in them as people,” he says. “We have to use the arts, the creativity, the potential that’s in these children to make the world a better place.”

McDaniels will be honored by DAT alongside Erin S. Gore, Co-Head of Wells Fargo’s National Education & Nonprofit Commercial Banking team, on March 24 in New York City.
