‘Paperblanks’ Amy Winehouse Foundation Journals Available Soon

Paperblanks are excited to finally be able to tell you about the newest addition to the Embellished Manuscripts Collection, the ‘Amy Winehouse, Tears Dry’ journal. Designed in partnership with the Amy Winehouse Foundation, this book features a self-portrait of the British singer alongside her signature and lyrics to one of her most recognizable songs, ‘Tears dry on their own’.

Royalties from the sale of this journal will go to the Amy Winehouse Foundation. This global charity helps prevent the effects of drug and alcohol misuse on young people. The Amy Winehouse Foundation was set up by her family in memory of Amy and it also aims to support, inform and inspire vulnerable and disadvantaged young people to help them reach their full potential.

Amy Winehouse personally owned many Paperblanks journals and Alex Winehouse from the Foundation explains more about the design chosen for the cover “I personally wanted to find a sketch that Amy had drawn – it is something I think Paperblanks do very well in respect to other artists and musicians in the portfolio – that showed that she was a fun, quirky, loving person. This sketch, taken from a little note she had written, sums her up very well I think. To the world, she was a major music star. To her family and friends, she was someone completely different. I think, with the sketch and the lyrics featured on the book cover design, we get both of these sides.”

Hoping to inspire future songwriters, writers and poets the Embellished Manuscripts Collection features famous artists, writers and philosophers, and creates a space for people to write their thoughts or works of art of their own.

The ‘Amy Winehouse, Tears Dry’ journal will be available to buy from March and comes in Mini, Midi and Ultra size.

Nas Being Honored by the Amy Winehouse Foundation

Nas will be honored at the upcoming Amy Winehouse Inspiration Awards & Gala, taking place on October 11, in New York City at the famed Waldorf Astoria hotel.  He’ll also perform during the Amy Winehouse Foundation’s black-tie event, which will also recognize Amy collaborators Tony Bennett and Salaam Remi.

Salaam is credited with producing Nas’ Life is Good song “Cherry Wine,” featuring the late Amy.  He also crafted the track “Like Smoke,” featuring Nas, from Amy’s Lioness: Hidden Treasures album.  “She was really inspired by him,” Salaam says of Amy, whose music he introduced to Nas in 2004.

In addition to sharing a love of music, Amy and Nas also shared a birthday, Sept. 14.  “Amy was an amazing talent and a special artist.  She was like a little sister to me,” Nas says.  “I’m happy to be involved with a foundation that not only keeps her memory alive but helps support those things she cared most about — kids and music.”

Tickets for the Amy Winehouse Foundation gala are $1,000 each, with money benefiting U.S. charities.  One of the foundation’s projects in the U.S. is to lend a hand to the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra in its efforts to provide after-school music programs for children living in districts still struggling after Hurricane Katrina.  Amy’s father, Mitch Winehouse, recently visited the 9th Ward in New Orleans and delivered a $10,000 pledge to the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra.

The winners of the inaugural Amy Winehouse Inspiration Award will be hip-hop legend Nas, crooner Tony Bennett and producer/songwriter Salaam Remi. Nas to Be Honored, Perform at Amy Winehouse Foundation Gala

by Arati Patel

The hip-hop icon will be honored alongside singer Tony Bennett and producer Salaam Remi with the Amy Winehouse Inspiration Award.

The Amy Winehouse Foundation announced that rap legend Nas will be honored at the Amy Winehouse Inspiration Awards & Gala, taking place at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City on Oct. 11. The foundation chose to honor Nas for his contributions in “helping to inspire greatness in others.”

Singer Tony Bennett, who donated a portion of the proceeds from his “Body & Soul” track with Winehouse to the Winehouse foundation, and producer Salaam Remi, who introduced Nas and Winehouse, will also be honored with the Amy Winehouse Inspiration Award.

Formed in 2011 by her family, the Amy Winehouse foundation was developed in the U.K. to honor Winehouse and her contributions of music education to children in need after her passing in July 2011. It was launched in New York City in April.

Nas and Winehouse were not simply musical colleagues but reportedly good friends as well. The duo met in 2004 and has since recorded tracks together that highlight their compatibility as musicians from two different genres. Nas’ hip-hop roots blended with Winehouse’s raspy soul sound created two instantly popular tracks on both artists’ albums. Remi, who produced the Winehouse-Nas track “Like Smoke” from her Lioness: Hidden Treasures album, recently talked to THR about his relationship with Winehouse and Nas.

“When I’d just met Amy, I was doing ‘Made You Look’ for Nas’ God’s Son album at the time,” Remi said. “And I was just starting to work on Amy’s Frank album, so there are Nas songs where Amy did ad libs on them that we never put out that were just background that she was just singing on. She was really inspired by him … Over the last couple years a lot of times if I had my computer on in the studio, my Skype would ring and Amy would be there, ‘Hey what’s up?’ And then she’d end up talking to Nas or whatever, then they got each other numbers and they would talk. Remi also produced “Cherry Wine” from Nas’ newest release Life is Good, also featuring Winehouse.

“Amy was an amazing talent and a special artist. She was like a little sister to me,” said Nas. “I’m happy to be involved with a foundation that not only keeps her memory alive but helps support those things she cared most about — kids and music.”

The upcoming gala will feature Nas as well as other performers that have yet to be announced. This is the first gala thrown by the Winehouse foundation, which is run by her parents Mitch and Janis Winehouse, and tickets are priced at $1,000. The entire proceeds from this event will go to the many US programs supported by the Amy Winehouse Foundation.

Amy Winehouse Foundation to Honor Nas at New York Gala

by Kory Grow

If the lyrics to “Me and Mr. Jones” weren’t proof-positive enough that Amy Winehouse had a deep respect for Queens-bred rapper Nas (he’s Mr. Jones, after all), the inclusion of the song “Like Smoke,” on the first of possibly many posthumous Winehouse releases, Lioness: Hidden Treasures, provided more insight. Then there’s “Cherry Wine,” a song on Nas’ latest, Life Is Good, that features a previously unheard Winehouse vocal and proves her admiration (or at least appreciation) was mutual.

In celebration of that relationship, the Amy Winehouse Foundation will honor Nas at a $1,000-per-person dinner, dubbed the Amy Winehouse Inspiration Awards & Gala in New York on October 11. He will also perform alongside other, yet-to-be-announced guests. Others receiving awards from the foundation, which raises money to help children in need at various organizations in her name, include crooner Tony Bennett and producer Salaam Remi, who introduced Winehouse to Nas’ music and produced both “Like Smoke” and “Cherry Wine.”

“When I’d just met Amy, I was doing ‘Made You Look’ for Nas’ God’s Son album at the time,” Remi recently told the Hollywood Reporter. “And I was just starting to work on Amy’s Frank album, so there are Nas songs where Amy did ad libs on them that we never put out that were just background that she was just singing on. She was really inspired by him… Over the last couple years, a lot of times if I had my computer on in the studio, my Skype would ring and Amy would be there, ‘Hey what’s up?’ And then she’d end up talking to Nas or whatever, then they got each other numbers and they would talk.”

“Amy was an amazing talent and a special artist. She was like a little sister to me,” Nas said in a statement. “I’m happy to be involved with a foundation that not only keeps her memory alive but helps support those things she cared most about — kids and music.”

In a since-removed video, Nas recalled of Winehouse, “Instantly, the voice just caught me. That was, like, 2004.” And he went on to say, “Music came so easily to her. She can’t just give you a record because… she’s hot and it’s going to sell records. No. That wasn’t her style. And she was so nonchalant about it that it reminded me of myself.”

The mission of the Amy Winehouse Foundation-U.S., a press release explained, is to help children in need through music therapy and music education. First off, it hopes to assist the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, in supporting after school music programs for children in areas still struggling after Hurricane Katrina. Winehouse’s father Mitch reportedly visited the Crescent City recently and donated presented $10,000 raised by the Foundation to the Orchestra.
