“Smokin’ Gun” singer/guitarist Robert Cray brings his soulful blues style to the 7 Flags Events Center in Clive this weekend. Cray’s music career dates back more than 30 years and includes a blink-and-you’ll-miss him cameo as a member of Otis Day and the Knights in the 1978 comedy film “Animal House.”
A five-time Grammy winner, Cray got his start playing college towns on the west coast and working on albums like “Bad Influence” and “False Accusations” along with “Slowdown” with the legendary Albert Collins.
In 1986 he earned his first crossover success with “Strong Persuader,” featuring the hit “Smokin’ Gun.” Rolling Stone named “Strong Persuader” as one of the 100 greatest albums of the ’80s.
Since that initial breakthrough, Cray has remained a popular favorite, has toured with Eric Clapton and was just this year inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame. In that time he has recorded with acts like John Lee Hooker, David Sanborn and The Memphis Horns.
Cray’s most recent release is the live CD/DVD “Cookin’ in Mobile,” recorded at the historic Saenger Theatre in Mobile, Ala.
Local bands Voodoo 3 and Bella Soul open.
